About Us
Okarito Kayaks is a small, award-winning, family-run business, owned and actively operated by us – Baz Hughes and Gemma van Beek, with our kids Rowan and Josh bossing us around.
Our business has been operating for over 30 years and has a great reputation for not just the fantastic kayaking on offer, but also the level of service we offer customers. We’re not a big volume, anonymous business where customers are numbers; our reputation is as a boutique, high quality, nature experience.
In 2021, we started up a major environmental volunteer initiative, GorseBusters, that we run to look after the stunning remote lagoon environment and to host visitors from around the country for a week each year to help out. This project was part of work our business did that contributed to Okarito Kayaks winning the Sustainability Award in the West Coast Leading Light Awards in 2022; we genuinely believe in investing in our team, our environment, & community, to leave them better off than we found them. It’s part of our core mission for the business, for us personally, and hopefully for our whole team.
