Come and live the dream on the beautiful West Coast!  Franz Josef Glacier is a small town that’s full of life, with lots of world-class walks and attractions and a small population of like-minded outdoorsy individuals.

What do we do?

We run guided kayak tours, scenic boat tours and fishing charters on Lake Mapourika, as well as Quad bike offroad adventure out of the Franz Josef Village.  Lake Mapourika is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site and is the largest Kettle Lake in South Westland.  It’s renowned for its mirror-lake reflections.

Looking for a qualified (SRL) Boat Skipper…

We’re on the hunt to fill a Skipper position, with a start date is flexible with positions available now.  This position can be seasonal, but ideally the right candidate will fit into our small team long term.

Our boat tours offer unbeatable views of the surrounding glaciers, and explore a kiwi sanctuary on the far side of the lake. We offer Scenic Cruises, Fishing Charters and Guided Rainforest walks. All of our tours offer a high level of interpretation of the local area which we are happy to help train for the right person.

This position works alongside our small team of kayak and quad guides, and the owners.  The role is diverse, and there’s opportunity to grow within other aspects of our tourism organisation including working on the other tours we offer such as quad guiding.

This job has it all if you love being outside and on the water!  During the summer season we all work hard and can run up to 3 tours per day.  However we also provide lots of opportunity to enjoy extra days off and to explore the area.

Franz Josef is a unique area, with relatively low living costs.  Rent here is reasonable when compared with other regions and there’s lots of local deals when you live here.  We will help applicants find suitable accommodation if required.

The job involves:

• Running the day to day tours and general boat up-keep.
• Launching the boat and taking off the water at the end of the day.
• Providing interpretation on the local area, flora and fauna.
• Provide instruction to fisherman (freshwater fishing experience is an advantage but not necessary)
• Assisting with operations aspects of the business
• Applicants must be available to work over the holiday period, on all public holidays except for Christmas Day

Applicants must have:

• Confidence and personality to speak and entertain large groups as well as the ability to work under pressure
• SRL or equivalent Maritime qualification
• A full clean driver’s licence
• A valid first aid certificate (or willing to get one)
