Marahau Sea Kayaks ( MSK ) has been locally owned and operated since it was established in 1986. The company started out with a couple of kayaks operating out of a shed as part of the Marahau Beach Camp. As the Abel Tasman National Park’s reputation as New Zealand’s premium location for sea kayaking grew, so did MSK.
Peter and Sandra Alborn purchased the Marahau Beach Camp business in 1997, which included what would later become Marahau Sea Kayaks – MSK and Marahau Water Taxis. They quickly set about revitalising the business, the services it provided and all its facilities. Buildings were renovated, paint was thrown around with reckless abandonment and the old equipment was phased out as soon as the business could afford to do so.
In 2001 the Alborns purchased and developed a property on the Marahau waterfront that would become the hub of the Marahau village; the Abel Tasman Centre. The booking office and general store also became the centre of operations for Marahau Water Taxis and Marahau Sea Kayaks – MSK. With its stunning views across Tasman Bay and the southern end of the Abel Tasman National Park – Hooked – the café and beer garden, rounded out the facility rather nicely. Right across the road, and still only a stone’s throw from the waterfront, Marahau Beach Camp provided accommodation options for everyone: powered and unpowered camping and campervan sites, a backpacker’s lodge and private cabins.
In combination, the Abel Tasman Centre provided all of the activities and facilities visitors need for an incredible experience in the Abel Tasman National Park. Visitors also discovered that with its laid-back village atmosphere, Marahau itself was a cool place to spend some time.
Marahau Sea Kayaks – MSK is owned by the Alborn family, a local family that has been in these parts for generations.
