Outdoor Education Instructor/Technician Part Time

An exciting opportunity has become available for an Outdoor Education Instructor/Technician to join Nayland College’s renowned outdoor education programme. From bushcraft and rock climbing to whitewater kayaking and alpine missions, you’ll help students grow.

Start Date: Term 1, 26 January 2026 (negotiable)

Contract: Permanent. 36 hours a week, 40 weeks a year + 4 weeks of annual leave.  Overnight allowance up to 46 nights a year, under Support Staff Agreement

About Nayland College

Nayland College offers one of New Zealand’s leading Outdoor Education programs, from Year 9 through to Year 13.

Set among stunning scenery and three nearby National Parks, the programme integrates tikanga Māori, fostering respect for te taiao. Our goal is to spark a lifelong passion for the outdoors.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead afternoon practical sessions and classroom sessions.
• Instruct a wide range of outdoor skills, including bush skills, whitewater kayaking, sea kayaking, rock climbing, mountain biking, caving, alpine, first aid.
• Carry out gear technician duties: repairs, orders, and safety checks.
• Manage inventory of outdoor education equipment.
• Support audit process
• Instruct on overnight trips during the school term up to 46 nights a year

What We’re Looking For

• Experience in instructing outdoor education, including organising and leading practical sessions, off-site instruction, and overnight trips.
• Professional, adaptable, and able to work closely with a variety of students and staff across the college.
• Ability to use a range of instructing techniques that cater to diverse student learning needs.
• Commitment to evaluating and improving instructional strategies.
• Strong technical skills in gear maintenance, repairs, safety checks, and inventory management.
• Excellent communication, flexibility and organisational skills.
• NZOIA qualifications (preferred) or equivalent outdoor instruction credentials. Holding NZOIA Kayak 1 and Sea kayak 1 is an advantage.
